Choosing Your Chainsaw Course

Choosing which chainsaw course to take can be confusing, especially when the vast majority of them have pre-requisites that you must meet before attending the course you actually want to get on!

It’s a good idea to know what you want to achieve, these courses are really designed for professional users of chainsaws and there is a fairly ordered progression from foundation course to advanced level.

I’m just starting out, what can I do?

There are a number of courses that you can do… as well as the courses for wood-chipper operations, stump grinding and operating a MEWP, there are two related threads to chainsaw courses. One thread covers the ground-based chainsaw user, starting with the maintenance and cross-cutting, and the other thread for aerial operators starting out with the tree-climbing and aerial rescue course.

Neither of these courses have any pre-requisites and they form the foundation of the remaining chainsaw courses.

I Work On The Ground…

Once you have completed the foundation chainsaw maintenance and crosscutting course you can work your way through the various felling courses, starting with ‘small’ fell and working up to deal with potentially dangerous windblown trees and emergency situations.

If you already hold CS30 (now superceded), or the newer Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Crosscutting, then your next course is likely to be the Level 2 Award in Felling and Processing Trees Up To 380mm, although we often combine the maintenance, crosscutting and small fell into one course called the Level 2 Award in Ground-Based Chainsaw Operations [code 20-12].

I Want To Be A Climber…

Once you have completed the Level 2 Award in Tree Climbing 7 Aerial Rescue [code 20-13], or if you already hold the CS38 qualification, then the natural progression is to complete the Level 3 Award in Aerial Cutting Using Freefall Techniques [code 21-08]… however, this course (21-08) has several pre-requisites that must be met before you can undertake it…
